Faster data rates. NFC-A/B tags currently top out at 106 kbps. The roadmap targets up to 848 kbps — eight times faster — mainly for digital identity (passports, mobile driver's licenses) and access control systems moving larger cryptographic payloads in a tap. It's not a firmware tweak: the Analog Specification needs real changes to modulation, so new antenna designs and test equipment are involved. Most everyday NDEF records — a URL, a vCard, a Wi-Fi password — are a few hundred bytes, well within what today's tag capacity already handles. Spec work is expected within a year; certification takes longer.

Multi-purpose tap. One tap that pays, awards loyalty points, and sends a receipt at once, instead of three separate transactions. The mechanism, called Seamless Service Discovery, would let a reader request the specific credentials it needs from your wallet — similar to a payment terminal asking for your preferred card, generalized across ID, tickets, and loyalty cards. Still ideation-phase, not a finished spec.

Wireless charging. NFC Wireless Charging currently caps at 1 watt. The roadmap pushes toward 3 watts, plus device-category-specific charging profiles and multi-receiver charging. Think smart glasses charging both temples at once when folded into a case. The current 2.0 spec has reached final draft and is being adopted as IEC Standard 63652; 3 watts is estimated three to four years out.

Digital identity and access control get the faster-data-rate work first — that's what's actually driving the spec changes. Multi-purpose tap, if it ships, will likely surface in retail and payments first, the same space where tap to pay on iPhone already lives. Platform behavior matters too.
