Why Apple Pay Taps Fail After iOS 26 (and How to Actually Fix It)
Apple Pay NFC not working after iOS 26? Check the default contactless app, case and Wallet clean-up, then card and account issues, in order.
Why Apple Pay stalls at the reader on iOS 26
Apple hasn't published a fix for an Apple Pay bug in iOS 26. Most failed taps still trace back to a handful of settings you can check in about ten minutes, so work through them from cheapest to most disruptive.
What people are seeing after iOS 26
The typical report is a tap that hangs. In one Apple Community thread, contactless Apple Pay on an iPhone 15 Pro stalled at the NFC "waiting" state with no error, and the terminal timed out. Other users described the same on an iPhone X, iPhone XS, iPhone 13 mini and an Apple Watch Series 7 on watchOS 26.0.2.
Apple's remote hardware diagnostic found no fault in that case, and Apple Support pointed to software. The thread was closed with no confirmed fix, and some users said iOS 26.0.1 did not help. Treat the community fixes below as worth a try, not as guaranteed cures.
Check the default contactless app first
This one often looks like a bug. If another app is set as your default contactless app, double-clicking the side button or holding the iPhone near a reader opens that app after you unlock, and your Wallet cards are not shown, according to Apple's support page.
Open Settings, tap Apps, tap Default Apps, then Contactless Apps, and choose Apple Wallet. Apple documents the path, and notes the option appears only on iPhone and only in certain countries and regions. We cover this setting in more depth in our guide to the default contactless app.
Meanwhile, you can still pay: open Wallet, pick your card, double-click the side button and authenticate. Express Mode cards, keys and passes keep working without unlocking.
Rule out position and case problems
Double-click the side button so Apple Pay is actually active. A moderator in the same thread noted that simply holding the phone near a reader may not activate it. Then hold the top of the iPhone close to the reader and keep it there until the check mark appears.
Take off any thick or metal-backed case and restart the phone. If you're unsure where the NFC antenna sits on your model, read that first, because holding the wrong part of the phone to the reader looks identical to a software fault.
Clean up Wallet and conflicting apps
Users in the thread reported these steps. None are confirmed by Apple.
- Verify your cards in Wallet & Apple Pay settings. One user said this fixed it.
- Remove unused cards under "Cards Found For You", and toggle "Show History" off and on to clear transaction history.
- Delete, not just disable, any VPN, antivirus or cleaning apps, then reset network settings. A moderator suggested this.
- On Apple Watch, select the card in the Wallet app and double-tap to activate it. One user said that restored payments.
Note your cards before removing any. Re-add them one at a time so you can tell which one misbehaves.
Card, account and issuer checks
If a payment is declined rather than stalled, the cause is probably not NFC. Apple's card setup page lists the basics: your card issuer must support Apple Pay, you need a passcode or biometrics set, two-factor authentication must be on for your Apple Account, and a locked, inactive or disabled account can block cards. For declines and errors such as "Could Not Add Card" or "Card Device Limit", Apple points you to your bank.
If the problem is tags, not payments
Developers have posted a separate set of reports. On the Apple Developer Forums, one app that read tags on iOS 18 failed on iOS 26, and a later poster on iOS 26.3.1 saw readerErrorSecurityViolation the moment a Core NFC session started. No fix is confirmed. Apple asks for a Feedback Assistant report with a sysdiagnose.
To find out whether your iPhone's NFC radio works at all, try reading a plain NTAG sticker with a tag app such as NFCore. A successful read suggests the antenna is fine, though it does not prove Apple Pay will work.
When to contact Apple
If none of this helps, contact Apple Support. Give them your iPhone model, the exact iOS 26 version, whether it fails at every reader or only some, and what the terminal shows. Those details are what a bug report needs.
The short version
Start with the default contactless app. Then check activation and your case, clean up Wallet, and finally look at your card and account.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Apple Pay broken in iOS 26?
There's no Apple statement confirming a payments bug. Users report stalls after updating, and Apple Support in one thread pointed to software, but that thread ended without an official fix. Work through the checks above before assuming it is the update.
Why does my iPhone open another app when I tap a reader?
A different app is set as your default contactless app. Change it in Settings > Apps > Default Apps > Contactless Apps, where available.
Should I remove and re-add my card?
It's a reasonable late step if restarting and verifying cards did not help. If payments are declined rather than stalled, ask your bank first, since Apple sends declined-card problems to the issuer.
